UiPath and others now charge for AI usage on top of robot licences. Your automation budget stops being a fixed number.

Automation platforms used to be simple to budget for. You bought robot licences, you knew what the year cost, and that was the end of it.
That has changed. UiPath and its competitors have added AI capability to their platforms, and they charge for it by usage — credits or units you buy up front or pay for as you consume. A robot licence is still a fixed cost. The AI sitting on top of it is not.
What this means for you
Your automation budget now has a variable line in it. Treat it the way you would treat cloud spend: know which process is consuming what, review it monthly, and set a ceiling before someone discovers the number at year end.
The temptation is to use AI where you do not need it. The platforms make it easy to put an AI step into an automation that a simple rule would handle. Rules are cheaper to run and break less often. That test has not changed, and it now has a direct cost attached to getting it wrong.
Check both models before you renew. Licence-based and usage-based pricing produce very different numbers depending on your volumes. Run yours through both.
