AI AGENTS

What AI Agents Actually Do

How agents connect information, reasoning and action.

Start with a task: gather information, decide what comes next and take action. An AI agent can connect those steps within a defined scope.

The answer is only one part.

An agent can retrieve a policy, identify the next step and use an approved tool to carry it out. It might find a document, prepare a form or update a connected system.

Its effectiveness depends on the information, permissions and tools available to it. Clear limits matter as much as the model’s capabilities.

Chatbot, copilot or agent?

A chatbot responds through conversation. A copilot helps a person prepare or review work. An agent can carry out a sequence of steps within agreed limits. These patterns overlap; the important questions are who decides and which actions are allowed.

Keep sensitive decisions with a person. For repeatable tasks with clear boundaries, an agent may reduce the manual handoffs.

Start with the boundaries.

Define what the agent may access, what it may change and when it must ask for help. Test missing documents, uncertain answers and requests outside its scope.

Place human review before consequential actions and at exceptions. The right level of oversight depends on the task.

A practical example.

ClarityArc’s HR agent answers employee questions, retrieves information and performs controlled SharePoint actions in Microsoft. Estimated savings in this deployment are approximately 400 hours of HR effort annually.

Begin with a repeated task. Check the information and permissions, then prototype a scope small enough to assess.
