BUILDING SOFTWARE / EXPLAINER

What Should the First Version of Your Application Do?

Start with the users, the workflow and the one result that matters.

A custom application should fit the way your business already works. The first version doesn’t need to do everything. It needs to do the one thing its users most need, well.

Three kinds of build.

Business applications support the decisions and workflows that matter.

Connected systems bring information and application steps together.

Digital products turn an application idea into a useful first release.

An example: one schedule across a facility.

A show-jumping facility needed riders and staff to see the same schedule and the same notices. The first version was a custom scheduling and communication application that works on desktop and phone. That is a specific project, not a standard feature package.

Practical check: Write down who uses it, the workflow it supports and the single result that would make it worth using. That is your first version.

Bring the users, the workflow and the idea.

Business experience guides the build. Scope, constraints and next steps come from how the work happens today, not from a list of features.
